Librarian Wank!

Via FreeRange Librarian and GalleyCat:

Controversy! over Orson Scott Card's selection as the ALA/YALSA Margaret A. Edwards Award honoree for lifetime achievement as a young adult author.

Apparently, the selection committee didn't know that Card is a big, fat homophobe. Galley Cat covers the resulting wank.

The huge flaw in their attempt to justify this is that, at least as I understand the situation based on the article, this award was given to the author for his efforts in helping young people find themselves in the world - and not to one or more of his works.

No matter how good the work is, or even how much the work may fit the guidelines, you can't honour the person for something they are manifestly not doing.

I'd be much more comfortable if this were an award given to a specific work of Card's that deals with young people, like Ender's Game. Giving it to Card himself is not acceptable.

I had to figure out my own concept of the author vs. the author's works a very long time ago when I realised that the person who wrote some of my favourite poems - Ezra Pound - was a fascist.

Wow, color me uninformed - I sure didn't know all that about OSC. I've always liked his writing - but what a wanker!
