So, by popular (gin and Neko asked) demand, I'm going to write about prom. I'll do the usual list thing so I can organize my thoughts. This is most likely (who am I kidding? is) going to be long and very detailed, so feel free to skip or skim as the mood takes you.
~I got the dress and shoes a couple weeks in advance. The dress was greenish-blue with a sparkly gauze over-layer in the same color and the shoes were silver heels that had, by the end of the evening, been determined to be thoroughly impractical for walking on any surface whatsoever.
~The afternoon began with leaving school to go get my hair done (because the most complicated thing I ever do to it is put it a ponytail) and my nails painted some exciting color. I would up spending about two hours at the salon because some of the people there offered to do my makeup and nails. Word to the wise: getting my eyebrows waxed hurt rather more than I expected. Don't bother doing it unless you're going somewhere highly cool (prom qualifies, but it still hurt.)
~All the stuff at the salon took longer than I expected, but I managed to get home quickly. Once there, I was in my prom dress and ready to leave in about five minutes, so I got to Kathryn's house to meet people for the prom on time. Funnily enough, all the girls except Carson were there before any of the guys showed up. Take that, silly "girls get dressed slowly" stereotypes.
~My parents decided to stick around to take pictures and stuff, so there was a short awkward moment when Noah showed up; Noah, being awesome, decided to break it by saying "awkward moment!" and starting the round of parents-sniff-each-other introductions. We walked off, spent a minute trying to figure out how to open the corsage box (very pretty corsage- white roses with a greenish-blue ribbon that even matched my dress. I was impressed,) and talked for a bit before the collected parental units decided to drag everyone out onto the back porch for lots of pictures. These pictures took roughly half of eternity, but Carson finally showed up and changed into her dress so we could take a round of pictures on the front steps and then rush off to the restaurant, which had been threatening to cancel our reservation. Somewhere at the end of this little interlude I learned that standing on dirt in high heels turns the dirt into evil quicksand.
~Our prom group (seven people) was too big for one car and Noah's mom had errands to run downtown, she took us to Ecco, where we waited for everyone else to show up. They had to find valet parking, so that took a while. The "fancy restaurant" experience was interesting. We ordered two kinds of cheese and some beef-pork salami for appetizers; we picked the salami because Noah's Jewish (even though he ate a bite later) and Kathryn won't eat beef, so we decided to exclude both of them equally. Everyone at the table must have had about a loaf of bread each, because the waiter kept bringing more and we were eating it with absolutely everything for the whole meal. We looked at the entrees and went "we don't understand half the words in the complicated dishes and some of this stuff is (surprise) really expensive. We wound up ordering two pizzas (tomato and basil) and a plate of pasta. Funnily enough, Noah and I both scraped all the tomatoes off our pizza, so I didn't feel like such a terminally picky dork.
~The Egyptian Ballroom at the Fox Theater (only the coolest theater in Atlanta, for those who don't live here) is really interesting, but this was sort of hard to notice what with the lights consisting of rainbow-colored spotlights and a disco ball. The first hour or so of prom was mainly wandering around and trading compliments with most of my friends. Apparently it took a few people a while to recognize me with my elaborate prom costume thing, so that was kinda fun. The next bit was mainly talking out in the little courtyard with a bunch of friends wandering in and out and making fun of the music.
~Once the dance floor heated up and the crowd was big enough for losing people, the DJ started a slow dance; Noah offered to dance and I accepted, but we mainly made "um" noises and avoided eye contact until one of the math teachers walked by and we started making jokes about how she towers over all of us in our imaginations but is actually very short and only imposing because she wears creepy eyeshadow in colors that do not belong on human flesh. That song ended and the rap came back, but we discovered how white people dance to rap: jumping and twitching back and forth in 4/4 time to the approximate tempo of the song and grinning like idiots while occasionally bumping into each other. Excellently good fun, especially once I ditched my shoes and danced barefoot like every other girl with sense.
~After the dance we all went back to Kathryn's house to change into normal clothes, eat chicken fingers, and play around with a Wii for a while before someone turned on the karaoke video game. Yes, it was frightening. Kathryn, Carson, and Paul had decent performances, Pallavi and I sucked, and Daniel did a hilarious job with "That's Amore." The best part was Noah's first song, though: he's a great singer, but we made him do "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman" and we all kept cracking up. We all got tired at around three-or-four-ish and passed out on the floor and the couch with assorted blankets and pillows.
~Noah had to wake up early to do some sort of swim team thing, but the rest of us stayed for breakfast and watched Snakes on a Plane. It's a terrible movie and we kept falling asleep, but parts of it were funny and we cheered when some of the stupider characters died.
~I went home when the movie was over and napped a bit during the afternoon. Overall it was a really fun prom and I went with some great people. The only thing I wish I'd done was get a formal prom picture taken: Mom's rather angry and disappointed that I didn't get one, and, in retrospect, having one would have been nice. At least there are some nice candid shots and a few good posed ones from Kathryn's house.
Flora, Noah, and me standing around.
My whole prom group. From top to bottom: Kathryn, Paul, me, Noah, Carson, Daniel, Pallavi, Eric, Roseangel. The last two went somewhere different for dinner and we didn't see them much after that.
All the girls except poor delayed Carson. Back to front: Roseangel, Kathryn, Pallavi, me.
Noah and me during dinner. Yes, we can't smile for the camera very well.
