i'm pregnant! first ultrasound today, very strong little bubba in there... no gender yet of course, i'm only 12 weeks. and sick as a dog, as usual! pics to follow from ahab!
Ah, there was a TO Star article about two months ago with ON MWs discussing how they want to get the word out about the services they offer, but they're sort of afraid to, because hospitals are so stingy about giving them privileges that they have way more women who want their services than for whom they can reasonably provide. So, just by saying, "We don't do first tri appts," they limit demand. Interesting (disturbing?) push-pull in what OHIP makes them able to do and what individual hospitals are willing to allow in terms of numbers. It limits how many women they can train, too, since a) they don't *want* to train hundreds who then cannot get jobs because hospitals won't give them privileges and b) they *can't* properly train students who are limited to only certain numbers or kinds of births.
i'm not sure what's limiting them, but they have way more potential clients than they do time or midwives. and they always have students learning with them. i know my group doesn't have priviledges at g-town hosp, but i don't know why not. from what i remember from chatting with them when pg last time, there just aren't enough midwives to go around. maybe i'll try to find out what's going on....
