I'm currently trying desperately to get my shit together well enough to have a portable smithy ready to go in time to make the rounds as a vendor/guest artisan (blacksmithing) over the summer. If there are any Faires near you...and you can find them on teh intarwebz...get me the link and I'll try to make it there (assuming I can get this whole thing together).
I sold sausages on a stick. The King's Finest Meate! And the booth next to me sold iced coffee, milk, and tiny chocolate chip cookies. :D
That said, I'm all for people going and having a good time. I have no problem if people go in costume or not. But I do find it odd that people feel the need to dress up as Klingons for RennFest. Why? Don't get me wrong, to each their own, but why when it's not even related? Silliness. Anywho - I'm all about making things fun for the kids if it means getting them interested in history. As long as they are aware of what it's REALLY about, ya know?
I grew up an SCAer as well. In Alabama. We had an event once at our house, set up a little soup caldron over a campfire out back and everything. The next Monday at school, there were rumours that devil worshippers lived behind the school. We didn't do that again, I can assure you. ;-)
thank you very much - I needed that laugh! Devil worshippers, huh? Were you old enough to enjoy that one and play up to the rumors? I woulda' had so much fun with that one.
I agree about the Klingons, though I've only managed to see one of those the entire time I've been going to this fair (let's see, almost every year since 5th grade... *calculates*... holy shit - I've been going for more than half my life! 13 years!).
