Last time the girlfriend went to the dentist, she asked him whether he enjoyed his job. He told her that he was pretty bored with it, but the money was reasonable, and he couldn't see what else he'd do at this stage in his life

At least you had that realization. Many people go through their entire lives seemingly oblivious to the fact that all the others they encounter, personally or professionally, good or bad, are human beings.

I'm not sure they all are. I am fairly sure, for instance, that the Systems Analyst is from another planet, and that the majority of my work colleagues are some sort of demon. And then there are cats.
