Timezone: EST.
Other Characters Played (at Template): None.
Character: Demyx. Number IX in Organizaton XIII, titled the "melodious nocturne" by his superior.
Series/Fandom: Kingdom Hearts. Specifically Kingdom Hearts II, since the new middle game hasn't been released yet. I consider in-game, manga and novels to all be canon, more or less, so he's kind of a mash up of everything.
Original or Template version: Original.
Housing: Jamestown Street, Coronet House, Laundry Cove
Marking: None.
Age: Early 20's in appearance. His previous self was 22 years-old at time of death.
Gender: Male.
Species: Demyx is a Nobody. The shell of a former person, with an appearance similar to that of his previous self. He is without a heart, a soul and above all, feelings. Whether this is something he likes to realize or not.
Sexuality: Homosexual. His previous self - and past this point we will refer to him as his Other - was heterosexual. His homosexuality is mostly unexplored.
Appearance: Dirty-blond hair, bluish, sea-green eyes, 5'9". Athletic build. Longest point of his hair falls to the base of his neck, the rest styled up into a sort of fauxhawk with some loose strands falling into his face. Quite expressive.
He can be commonly seen wearing his Organization-issued coat: a black cloak with an oversized zipper at the front and a large hood. Black pants and gloves included in the ensemble, along with black boots with stylized silver tops. As pictured, he carries a blue, sitar-like instrument which is nearly as tall as he is.
Personality:
Demyx is, essentially, introverted, looking at the world from the outside in. He's self-conscious to a fault and doesn't always say exactly what he feels, due to social anxiety and fear of overstepping boundaries.
Despite this, he doesn't always think before speaking or acting. Things come out the wrong way - or the wrong things come out entirely, as he's rushed to speak, often left feeling flustered, especially during conflict, which he attempts to avoid at all costs.
He doesn't always understand sarcasm. Misinterpretation is frequent, usually in a negative light.
He lives on intuition, sometimes irrationally so - and he's more than happy this way; it's a reassurance of feelings. As such, emotional outbursts are not uncommon.
He far too easily attaches himself to people - 'impersonal' is not in his vocabulary and nearly all of his actions are very much sincere. As sincere as they can be. If something he considers important to him is put in danger, he will not hold back or limit himself from taking care of a threat.
If you can get beneath the awkward, uncomfortable social standing, you'll find a far more relaxed, knowledgeable and confident Demyx. 1-on-1 interactions are far more soothing for him and he's able to control his communication.
Very much like his Other, he looks at the world with a sense of wonder, discovering his surroundings and appreciating simple things that others would often overlook. At ease, he is carefree and lighthearted. Possibly because there isn't a heart to weigh him down.
Abilities/Strengths:
Demyx has the ability to summon and manipulate water and feels most comfortable when surrounded by it. He's constantly extending the limits of this ability, more often than not, able to make use of it without the help of his sitar - a blue, stylized version of the Indian instrument. Demyx is not what one would call skilled in combat. Combat falls under conflict and is meant to be avoided, in the Book of the Dem.
He works best in a team, making use of his water abilities, which can be brutal. He is able to form and shape the water as he pleases, move it freely with as much force as he pleases and create barriers and other walls, obscuring and deflecting enemy advances.
Hand-to-hand combat, on the other hand... While his reflexes are quick, they are usually not quick enough. He doesn't have much of a defense - only a very low and very vocal tolerance to pain. Not to say he can't throw punches - if there's enough adrenaline, his own strength can surprise him - but being so avoidant of confrontation, this is hardly ever realized. Adrenaline takes him a long way.
Beyond the water - and not often spoken of - Demyx is perhaps most confident in the notion that he does, in fact, possess something close to a heart - unlike what most other Nobodies tend to think. He is under the impression that the Organization has lied to him in a failed attempt at brainwashing, since he feels there's no other explanation for his behavior besides a, well, conceptual heart. Maybe not a heart exactly, but there's something there.
Whether this theory can be supported by fact is another story - Demyx is more than willing to shrug off details if an idea satisfies him. Thanks to this, he is more than willing to openly accept himself as a caring, supportive person - embracing the idea of affection and sensitivity, which provide a feeling of wholeness.
Demyx is a skilled songwriter, with music as one of the ways he's found to express and define himself without using words. It's a very personal process for him and he enjoys talking about his hobby, to those he trusts. His sitar is something of a third leg for him, something to lean on when life rears its judgmental head. He is always more than happy to play for someone who appreciates his talent.
Weaknesses:
As it's been mentioned, Demyx is self-conscious to a fault and sometimes his selflessness can fall under that as well. He bends over backwards for people and if this isn't met with reassurance and reinforcement, he's likely to become quite hurt. He becomes quickly attached to most anything. A lack of self-confidence is, by far, his greatest flaw, however.
He is something of a perfectionist when it comes to certain things, one could go so far to say vain. He is also one to assume the worst, often wavering between pessimism and optimism. In the end, he's quite hard on himself, especially when it comes to mistakes.
Considering his Other was sheltered from humanity, he is quite naive, especially when it comes to the world as a whole. With no thanks to that, he is easily taken advantage of and his fellow members in the Organization did nothing but. He isn't as much of a pushover as much as he is... slightly confused and/or overwhelmed. Demyx certainly has a backbone and if he or something he cares about is threatened, he is more than willing to step into the fray - but really, only under those circumstances.
History:
As stated, Demyx is a Nobody. The shell of a former person. That former person died via surrender to darkness and left their twisted shell of a body behind. This is what Demyx is, essentially. Twisted meaning the appearance is slightly skewed, the personality has indeed changed and he is without a heart - meaning, everything he "feels" is merely a leftover. Memories of how things would feel, how things felt as his past self.
After his birth as a Nobody, he was found by Organization XIII, a group of Nobodies with a similar goal: regaining their hearts and living again, with feelings. With a new name from his superior, newfound control over water and his trusty sitar by his side, he'd take what he could get and find himself a new heart.
Yeah, that attitude lasted for all of five hours.
Soon he began to detest the requirements set by the Organization. Constantly battling creatures of darkness while controlling the lesser forms of his own species, so to say... Conflict was not his strong point. And that's what it took to regain a heart - but the more he thought about it, the more he... almost felt okay, the way he was.
Demyx was somewhat of a loner in the Organization, not mixing well with the other members. Xigbar had a few demeaning nicknames for him, Axel looked down on him. Xaldin was civil to him, as well as Roxas. But that wasn't enough.
If the Organization was right about anything, a heart would at least get him away from these people. Start a new life, someplace near the ocean. Write his songs, maybe find someone to love with that newfound heart.
These ideas were set aside once Xigbar sent him down to the Underworld, confronting the opposite form of Roxas, the boy who stood in the way of Kingdom Hearts. This was Sora, the "hero", as his superior had taken to calling him. He didn't pay much attention during the meetings, in all honesty.
He followed his orders, more or less. Getting lost in the caverns, stumbling upon his target. And... he didn't get very far. And backing down, he left the scene.
Later, during a similar confrontation, the stakes rose. He wasn't sure why they sent him, of all members. Something felt... well, it could've been a feeling of dread. Something wasn't right. Desperation set in, just a tad. Adrenaline took over and the battle started, but everything went downhill. That's what happens when things start to look bleak and you lose concentration, apparently.
The outcome of that battle is still a mystery to him. There's only the recollection of a scream.
