Hugs. I'm sorry to hear it. It's always hard to lose friends. But 15 1/2 yrs is a good long life for a cat, and even if you did the treatment, some other health issues could just as likely come up next month and you'd lose her anyway. It's not your fault that you don't have the money or that inevitably lose her. But you, and she, do have my sympathies.
We're sort of thinking along those lines ourselves. We *could* scrape and scrimp and possibly maybe afford it...
But would it extend a good quality of life for her if it comes to that, and would it be a long enough extension to be worth the money? That...don't know.
I don't know her or the situation, and I'm certainly not a vet. But realistically speaking, if she were my cat (and I say that with my cat curled up on the couch "hugging" my leg) at that age, I don't think I would do it. It's a hard decision, but 15 is pretty close to the upper limits of a cat's lifespan, and it seems like when the body starts to go, it just goes downhill rapidly from there, no matter how much you don't want it to. So I am really sorry for all of you, but if it were me, I think I would let her go peacefully.
Marius had renal failure. We did the testing to figure out what was wrong, he went onto special kitty food, and I learned how to make a 'pocket' in the loose skin of a cat, poke in a needle, and sit for a few minutes while the right amount of ringer's lactated solution dripped into him.
It did work. It was worth it, for us. We got another three months out of him, I think. But we also had a vets office who was just happy to see the effort we were going to for that cat and who gave us a lot for free.
I'm sorry, hon. Loosing a furkid isn't easy. *hugs*
I'm not sure that would be possible to do with Shadow. She's never been very good at holding still unless SHE wants to snuggle. And even then, she'll leave quick if you disturb her.
I always had the feeling she was going to decline relatively quick when it happened. She's been so kittenish for her entire life. Even now, when she's feeling ok, she's got some of the kitten bounce. Not so much anymore. And I'm not sure 3-6 months would be worth the amount of money we'd have to spend *and* the irritation it would put her through...
