Come back, Shane....

I should watch it again to refresh my memory, but there is a scene in 'Pulp Fiction' where John "Vincent" Travolta and Samuel L "Jules" Jackson are sitting in the coffee shop, just before Tim Roth and Amanda Plummer come in to rob the joint. They are having a discussion about what Jules is going to do after he's done being a hitman (or whatever ( Read more... )

That scene was my favorite part of the whole movie. Well, that and when he gets his wallet back. He'd just been through this major epiphany, which for him meant he didn't kill the people who tried to take his money. That last scene made the entire movie for me.

Anyways, no, I don't have an answer for you. I think sometimes we might get brief experiences of that but eventually we'll get locked down somewhere.

I agree, that was the scene that made the film. That and Bruce Willis going back for samurai sword vengeance.

And I know that there is no answer to this question o' mine. I'm just feeling very angsty and antsy these days. I'd like to think i could just wander also, like a Zatoichi without the sword and blindness and manage to survive, let alone prosper. I'm so petrified that when I get a permenant job, thats it, thats all that life will be. Thanks for reply, m'man.

I would like to think that there's a way to live like this. I believe people can rid themselves of most of their possessions if they really want to. As far as forming roots, I've read in a number of places that many people AREN'T putting down roots these days--they're going to wherever the jobs are, moving every few years. And as for contentment--I want to believe that some people could still find happiness in exploring the country in the cheapest manner possible, meeting strangers & doing good deeds. Our society's so materialistic, it's disgusting, so it would be nice if some people DID try to live as you're describing!

I'd like to subscribe to the way you lay it out, Mary, I cry out to, but it seems like today this is just impossible. Say if someone had the desire to just backpack around a country, just a strange adventerous whim. It be impossible to simplify such a venture - you'd have to carry you IDr (or several forms of it), at least some amount of cash, some sort of toiletries (a backpack full of toilet paper, what an adventure) if your a guy, you need shaving supplies. Not to mention personal safety; I'd imagine this kind of thing would leave one incredibly vulnerable. Unless your in Europe which is littered with youth hostels, this kind of thing seems impossible.

And I hate this fact. I hate that we are what we buy, whether we like it or not. Progress has made sure of it. Argh! Help me, mary! :P

Hey there! I have not been on LJ in a while and was so happy to see that you are back on! Do you happen to know where Mary is? The last I remember, she went to grad school in PA.

Do you happen to know her email? I really miss talking to her and would like to get back in touch.

Gosh, it's so good to see you again! :) I really loved your posts!

Take Care!

Perhaps I am just too cynical (which I have been told I am.) but I don't think this type of life is possible in the idealized sense of it. The world is just too big and can be a scary and harsh place to just wander aimlessly. I don't know, it just doesn't sound appealing to me. I don't want to be suspect to disease and hunger.

and Pulp Fiction totally owns.

Ben? You're...back? *confused* Can you believe I kept you on my list for all this time, hoping you'd come back??? Does that frighten you?

Weren't you in the process of getting a job in Japan? Or was it Canada? Eh, they're pretty much the same.

If you get this, would you respond?
