I really though I was doing some headway with my novel, I really did, until I started doing research tonight. Apparantly some folk believe 70-75k word count is the perfect size for a full fledged novel. From what I read, its the range that most agents are looking for. And where am I? Swimming in a whole lotta 20.5k. Darn. I need to bust some ass! ( Read more... )

Mine is around 50-65k, and would be a short novel. 20k would be a novella, I think.

On the forum that I was reading, a lot of posters were making claims that novella-sized and even the short novel sized were difficult to promote and get picked up by a publisher, but I never would have guessed that size (god pardon the cliche) mattered. Seems like a good size of the worlds classics are all slim little buggers, and I never thought I would have to pad my writing in order to get it moving. Whats your thoughts?

I know 20,000 words will put you at less than 100 pages. When's the last time you've read a book that was only 100 pages? I think the shortest one I read was about 130, and it was by an established author (and very good, btw ( ... )

Thanks for the good word, and I can see what you're saying. Thankfully with my meager 20k words I had considered myself to be just wrapping up the first act, so I might be able to stretch myself to the 75k mark without fluffing. I know what you mean about the diversion tactic, but doing so might be a struggle for me, making it seem plausable and not an obvious page-stalling tactic. Still, I have no problem with finishing it up by December - Im in no hurry, i guess.

I can't even write a 10 page paper...that is, without resorting to elementary school writing like "such and such is good because I say it is!" Lol.
20.5 thousand words ain't nothing to sniff at either! You'll get there...
