...though you die, La Resistance lives on!

Here's a weird request. I enjoy writing my own murder ballads...that is, not about my murders, obviously, but about either invented stories or actual events. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share any strange stories that involve weird psychos or killers with me that you're familiar with. Again, I don't need real serial killers, maybe ( Read more... )

I would suggest two things.

The story of John Brown and Bleeding Kansas I personally think makes for a great gothic americana murder ballad.

Also, Leon F. Czolgosz is another intersting murderer in American History.

Also, fun to note that Leon, after leading American Anarchists feared he was a narc for being overly enthusiastic about joining their cause, decided he had to prove himself as a 'real anarchist, and decided to kill the sitting president. It doesnt mention that in the link, but that's who he was. Rather interesting fellow.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Halloween, this is some great stuff you pointed me to. The whole Bleeding Kansas affair, it's something I've never heard of before but am now so intrigued about. Good God, I don't even have to worry about a title for it, lol! The Czolgosz intrigues me the most, lots of meat in that one and seems like a story that lends well to a ballad. I kept hearing Cash's voice singing "Mister Garfields been shot down, been shot down low!". Can't wait to play with it.

It seems like this dark side of America is a great interest of yours. Aside from the music and lit, have you studied much reharding it all?

It was a really intersting point in American history. You always hear about how terrible and violent slave owners were, but you never really hear too much about the extreme violence carried out by a lot of anti-slaver folks. They really weren't all passive ( ... )

I've been wanting to read 'Assassination Vacation' for sometime now. I've seen her promote it on Conan and Letterman, and she's always extremely funny on their shows. Heh, I find her strangely attractive too! It's that dry wit, man, gets me everytime!

Lots of good info here, friend. Looking forward to hearing some more. Are there any local legends you know about? Around here, we have one good solid urban legend and that's it! People can be so dull-minded around here :D

Every community has a legend like this; this one is PG County, MD's own. "Goatman Hollow" is certainly a phrase to conjure with; I can hear the banjo already.

I'm so gonna be living at the site you gave me, heh. Thanks a ton. I wish i had the time to roam around the States researching stories like this. The Goatman is definately something that I'll have fun playing with. I better start working on the banjo too, heh.

Personally familiar with? Our next door neighbor killed his live in lady friend of many years about three years back...Apparently she was a little overbearing and he was as depressed as fuck so...one day after raking the yard, he stabbed her in the kitchen and tried to do himself in too. Didn't happen. Last I heard, he was in an "institution" in Trenton...
Erm. Not sure if this is what you're hoping for, but you got it! :p

Wow, this sounds kinda crazy. And this all happened while you lived by them? I like the idea how he killed her after raking the yard, as though it was another chore for him to do for the day. This is a cool angle to work from, though now I feel like I'm mining a terrible tragedy for my benifit.

Nice! I actually started working on this last night, had unbelievable inspiration. I'm writing the lyrics to the music of Nick Caves 'The Kindness of Strangers". Thanks again for the heads up!
