Surely the most fundamental tenet of sci-fi or any sort of fantasy writing is that you stick by the rules you've established?...It's such a shame that this is one of those episodes you really love whilst you're watching it and then end up going "huh? but??? hang on, noooo!" as soon as you start thinking about it. Is it terrible that my first compulsion is to say, "Well, Rusty didn't seem to give a rat's ass about that (and your latter observation is pretty much the whole of S2 for me...)"? I know that doesn't excuse it, but I think Rusty did it a lot more and more blatantly (I didn't even notice this one until you mentioned it, and now I'm wondering if it's possible to handwave it by saying that River and the Doctor were looking directly at Amy so they could only see the Angel peripherally? But I would have to go back to see if that would even work, and yeah, it doesn't work with Liberty--who isn't even made of stone--at all, alas
