Of Bears

I interrupt internet silence* to say that I have just watched a documentary on Black bears. Previously to this I had always rather fancied going to visit Montana but now I think I will stick to dear old Blighty where the most dangerous creature is a ticked off badger ( Read more... )

We have black bears here in Ontario. Not known to be dangerous unless you get between them and cubs/food. I see them at least once or twice a year. Do come some time.

Knowing my luck, the first time I see a bear I would be carrying a picnic hamper filled with honey sandwiches!

These bears were tearing bins apart man! Do they go after pets? And if its not bears, its cougars. How do cats survive in America? :)

They go after garbage and easily accessible food- campers who leave stuff out. They ignore, pets, people etc. Some years ago, while up at our cottage, a man knocked at the front door and asked to speak to my father. I wasn't sure where he was, but then heard some cans being rustled - out by the back door where we kept the garbage. Thinking it was my father, I went to call him, opened the door to find Mrs Brown Bear looking for lunch. I quickly shut the door. Disturbed, the bear decided to wander to a less busy location.
We see bears at the local dump, the general practice is to leave them alone. No incidents of attacks reported locally.

Cats survive and breed just as anywhere else. Lots of signs- free kittens.

I have to agree, bears are really not worth fearing. Respect, yes. Fear, no. I can't imagine you taunting a bear, Si! I think you'll be okay, plus we have such lovely sights to see in the US! Please come, dear! I'll take you to Yosemite, if you like? (Which is decided NOT in Montana, but it is lovely... and its near my hometown.) :)

I just don't think I have much sense with wildlife really :o)

When I was out in Alabama I was cooing over a snake that was lolling under my friends porch. I called my girls out to come and take a look but my friend yelled and stamped to scare the snake away. It was a copperhead - rather poisonous apparently - and this daft Brit was calling her babies out to see...
