Programs and software
VirtualDub-I use this for making screencaps, and for capturing frame sequences to use as mini-movie .gifs. (Works with .avi and .mpg files, will not work with .mov, .wmv or DVDs.)
IconXP-Program to create desktop icons. I use it for making lj icon templates, since the interface makes it easy to create straight line patterns and pixel designs.
ColorZilla extension for Mozilla Firefox-Color sampling tool that works from your browser-gives you the hex and RGB values for any color you sample, and will also measure the distance between two points on the screen & tell you the name of the element you're hovering over. I couldn't even guess at how many times a day I use this.
