[Shirl~! Heart's protocol activates as soon as she sees the picture and thus enters mode 4 just for her. Her smile becomes more pronounced and her penmanship becomes less generic. It kinda looks like... what you might expect out of a teenager girl in a note she's passing in class, I guess. The dots on the i's are hearts and other little details like that]

Yeah; it's pretty neat how you can just write to people like this~ you can see everyone's penmanship.

[One tap of the pen, two... three... and then he pens in her response all fluidly like:] Well~ I can see why you might. After all, voice is pretty easy to do and it might be like a phone to some people. I'm not sure I know which I prefer yet.

[...Heart giggles to herself here on this end, though Shirley obviously can't hear it, but then squiggles in something akin to a ♥ before answering-] I should've known you might not know that with handwriting as endearing as that~ It's a tool from back home, people can talk from a long ways away with them, sort of like these books.

Oh... so they're like the journals? What do they look like, if they aren't books?

Thank you... [Shirley watches the sketch as it takes form, an appreciative look on her face; while she has nice handwriting she's not much of an artist herself, so she enjoys watching people sketch.]

You're a very good artist, Heart. [There's a pause before the rest of her response, as she studies the drawing.] Wow, there are so many little parts... how does it work?

Well the pictures show up on the monitor here~ [And she draws an arrow to that] then the keys [arrow to them] are how you type in the words. There's one for each letter of the alphabet and them some for other symbols or numbers or those sorts of things. The mouse [arrow to that] is how you move around on the monitor.

[...She taps her pen on the journal a few times as she considers...] Of course, you can do a lot more on a computer than you can on these journals, I think.

So you can write without writing? That's so interesting... I wonder how the ink gets onto the paper...

A computer?... But didn't you draw what a phone looks like?

[...! She missed the point? Oh, she shakes her head, how silly of her. Anyway, she sighs before she then writes-] Oh, I'm sorry, I guess I didn't read carefully enough. That happens to me sometimes, I'm not as used to reading as I am to listening... [...]

[Shirley's idea of a computer and phone at this point is ... something like a typewriter. She'd get it if she had a physical one to look at she'd get it better, but... yeah. The thought of writing without paper has not even occurred to her, derp.]
