Written in Hungary before the collapse of the Soviet Union. Darkly humorous, inherently less depressing than _1984_ itself, but not a light read by any means...

Hello! And thank you. That looks really interesting - a "more optimistic" sequel written as the cold war was ending to balance the depressing novel that marked its opening. I will add it to the wish-list.
I'm interested that Wikipedia says it opens with the "death of Big Brother" - since I first read the book as a teenager, I always interpreted the fact that Big Brother was never seen in real life and never got older to mean that he wasn't real, or at least no more alive and real anymore than Goldstein. I guess that doesn't gel so well with the Eastern European experience of continuing to be ruled by real old men, though.
And I'm interested in the IJ post too - I got into fandom young enough and early enough that "meta as story" still seems like one of the most important features of fanfic to me. The current obsession with shipping/slashing for its own sake is really just a special case of the latter, as I see it.

I was wondering if you might like to be friended? I love your Goodies icon and am a fellow re-enactor althought I get a bit whingy sometimes in my lj as well, I try to make time to write nice things too.

Oh, hello! Pleased to meet you! I fear I've been rather quiet lately, mostly because I've been having good times instead of writing about them. Perhaps you will inspire me to share the goodness more :)
I think it's always nice to share the good times because there are so many times which aren't good and it's nice to read back on them and go.. Ahh, good times!""

You might find it a comfort (if a little bit of an odd comfort) to know that a young student in the US did a school project that resulted in the discovery that the water in the toilets in take-away restaurants has less bacteria in it than the ice from the ice-machine.

Um...hi! I heard from an IJ post that you were looking for _1984_ fics:
As it turns out, there's actually a published sequel to 1984:
