Yes, you should give him some liquids, a few sips at a time; and it should be some kind of electrolyte solution like Pedialyte or Gatorade or something along those lines. You should call the doctor or go to the emergency room if he develops a fever or shows signs of dehydration. This seems to be a fairly comprehensive explanation: http://www.emedicinehealth.com/dehydration_in_children/article_em.htm
Thankyou for weighing in. I thought I'd try starting 1-2 oz. and go from there. Yes, I am watching for fever. Fortunately, he is over that 3 year mark, and this is not quite so panic-inspiring as it would have been a year ago. I could kick myself for not having pedialyte/gatorade on hand; now we'll have to run out and get it when he wakes up.
Aw...poor baby. Yes, just an ounce or two to start with is probably best. Kids are resilent, so I'm sure he'll recover fast, but it sure isn't any fun when they're sick.
I'm no expert - I only have one, remember, but I'd say yes, definitely give fluids, just a few tiny sips at a time and do you have something like Dioralyte in the US? A sort of electrolyte balancer.. we can get orange flavour here and I used to make it up and give it to Genevieve in her old toddler 'sippy cup' and it it is good stuff - a little regression and a lot of cuddles seem to do the trick, she didn't need to eat then. Her grey skin and sunken eyes just seem to disappear - why is it these things are always so *dramatic* in the wee ones? Although if he started having bad diarrheoa (soz, sp?) I'd say waste no time and take him to the doc. If he is constantly vomiting try to get him to at least wash his mouth out with water - I had pneumonia when I was a kid and threw up a lot, my emerging back teeth just rotted away (and it happened again when I was pregnant!)
That is good advice (rinsing, even if not drinking) as he goes. For now he is much better, but I will file that away for future use. We do have an electrolyte type thing here in US, called Pedialyte. I just need to stock up ahead of time...
