Pi is the ratio between the circumference of the circle and the diameter of the circle. So essentially the distance around a circle is about 3.14 times greater than the greatest distance across that particular circle. I actually found it in third grade when I was trying to determine how fast a go-kart I was scheming to build would possibly go from the maximum RPM of the engine, the gear ratio of the gearbox I planned to use, and the diameter of the wheels connected to the axle. I measured the circumference of the back wheels physically with a piece of string and realized that no matter how big the wheel, the ratio would always be the same. Then I took all of that into consideration, calculated the hypothetical speed in feet per second because it was most convenient, then converted that measurement into miles per hour. I wanted the kart to have a maximum speed of about 25 miles per hour, so I adjusted the measurements accordingly until I found an ideal setup. angela, i was actually saying the exact same thing to myself as i read it...then i looked down and saw you siad it too...haha...and yes daniel, you are too smart...any kid in 3rd grade trying to find the RPM of anything is too smart haha...i love ya for it tho!
