It's interesting that Frank Miller has become such a protofascist fan of powerful authority, given that Batman: Year One was basically a whole graphic novel about how cops are assholes.

I'm sure someone more willing than I to reread Batman: Year One and The Dark Knight Returns with a critical eye would discover all kinds of warning signs. Meanwhile my favorite work by his is a Spider-Man annual from the mid-80s, so what do I know.

I was careful not to mention The Dark Knight Returns. It totally glorifies a fascist brute version of Batman. I think it's terribly sad that it's so often mentioned in the same breath as Watchmen.

As for Year One, it certainly has a big warning sign as to Miller's (even more severe later) sexism, in that it retcons Catwoman as starting off as a prostitute. But I really don't see any of the authority-worship that's so apparent in Miller's comically bombastic anti-Occupy Wall Street rant.

Well, it's been years since I reread it and I'm not exactly inclined to give it another go anytime soon, if you know what I mean...
