So, the new Amazing Spider-Man trailer:

Finally, clips that show some real promise for this film! Still not a big fan of the whole "dark secrets of Richard Parker" plotline, for reasons previously stated, and evidently Garfield's Peter is going to be a lot more intense than Maguire's, which could ... be either a good or a bad thing? Lee and Ditko's Peter Parker was very intense, prone to fits of melodrama and bitingly sarcastic, but I never envisioned him with quite the edge I'm hearing in Garfield's delivery. As always, we'll just have to see. The good part is there's actual humor and dynamism now, which goes a long way towards offsetting my misgivings.

At first I was disappointed that they're reversing Captain Stacy's role and making him (at least at the beginning) an obstacle rather than an ally, but the more I think about it the more sense it makes in terms of the other changes we know the writers have made. There've been some rumors going around that Uncle Ben won't actually die. This needs to be taken with an iceberg-sized grain of salt, obviously, but the idea does make a certain amount of sense; the more Ben's role as Peter's effective father gets downplayed, the less emotional resonance his death will have for the audience and for Peter. But if Ben's death is a no-go, that makes it a near certainty that one of the Stacys will die. Either George dies, probably right after forging an alliance with Spidey, and Gwen blames Peter for his death, setting up the romantic drama for the next film (possibly with MJ thrown in?), or Gwen dies, and George becomes this trilogy's Harry Osborn.

Now watch as I'm proven totally wrong in July.

Meanwhile, I saw Hugo the other weekend with E. Verdict? I probably would have enjoyed it more if I'd seen it earlier, before the pre-Oscar hype machine really got going. The story started off very slow, and neither of the young leads blew me away. But it was funny, gorgeous to look at, touching without being mawkish, and had just the right touch of magic to it -- which is all I need from a movie, really. The historical context was a nice bonus -- so many references to set my thwarted inner film major and wannabe archivist's hearts aflutter! E. and I had a lot of fun browsing Wikipedia afterwards.
