Dear Nintendo

My comment is in regards to Robert Pelloni's "Bob's Game", which came to my attention through various gaming websites (IGN.com, Kotaku, etc). I would love to be able to play Bob's Game and I would like to see Nintendo grant Robert Pelloni an authorized developer's license so that he can get his game published. I don't understand all the details, ( Read more... )

Look, I have to be honest and say that I'm with Nintendo on this one. Bob may have a good engine, but he has demonstrated no real gameplay and no storytelling. The game is obviously not even close to complete when you look at all the things his video doesn't show. I don't trust that he is actually going to be a good licensee at this point, and Nintendo needs to keep a tight ship on those SDKs.

There is a vid I didn't link to that demonstrates actual gameplay, but I didn't include it because I felt it would be more interesting after watching the other two. I'll post a link to it when I'm not behind an internet filter. I can also assume that Pelloni is being cautious about how much of the game he reveals to the public simply to protect his work. Based on what I've seen, I really wanna play this game, though ( ... )

SDKs can be used in a variety of ways, including to rip roms. Also, I'm sure that after the shit that Rockstar pulled on GTA:SA, Nintendo has a vested interest in going with developers with proven track records. This isn't to say that Rockstar was the new kid at the time. I simply mean that Rockstar, unlike Bob Pellosi, can be sued. Who want's Bob's meager assets? Working with big names means working with accountability.

Peter Molyneaux actually had to trick Nintendo into giving him an SDK to make Populous. Bob might have an easier time making an iPhone app.

Your depth of business and professional knowledge never ceases to amaze me.

LOL at Pellosi != Pelloni. Freudian slip?

I know that Nintendo prides itself in enforcing a standard of software quality and excellence

How does that explain EA (or insert name of dev you hate here)?

Maybe he ought to try to go the route of WiiWare, or XBLA, or the iPhone, or Android. Making a game for Nintendo's main platform, I would assume, is a tough sell.

Well, considering that this was a letter I sent to Nintendo, I figured I'd mostly limit myself to the "constructive criticism" category. Making that point in writing seemed like it'd be a bit much.

And how does that explain EA (or THQ more so)? Sufficiently large companies can do anything. Incidentally, I've come to enjoy the fruits of EA's conscious efforts to be more creative: Skate, Dead Space, and Mirror's Edge (the concept, at least) in particular.

He is pursuing other platforms (and I'm glad), but his original vision (as explained on his website) was to make a "Nintendo game" for a "Nintendo platform". From what I've seen of the game, I can understand why. And yes, I'm sure it's a tough sell on a Nintendo platform.

To add insult to injury is Nintendo's own propaganda: claiming that DS also stood for the developer's system. What a piece of marketing garbage!
