Good Lord, that IS irritating. It seems like no matter what anybody does for a living, someone finds a way to make a stupid joke about it. Trust me, I won't think less of you if just say "hi". A simple hello, followed by a nice "what do you do?" will suffice. That's it.

I like the way I spell it better, because it's gopher with an "L."
