The first sentence of your post got me really confused... as far as I can see, s_dupree is not registered from what I can see, and icons do show up in comments.

The thing about s_dupree being a reserved username kind of bothered me, so I went and asked LJ Support about it. Within a few hours, I got the following answer:

Usernames beginning with the characters "s_" are not allowed, as they were reserved by LiveJournal itself for future use with a specific type of account. You will need to select a different beginning for your username. For example, the username '_s_dupree' would be valid and is available.

Funky, no? I wonder what type of account that is. Maybe Security? Anyway, there's our answer.
