I decided to start making corsets about 6 months ago for myself. There have been ups and downs... mostly downs... but I'm just starting to get the hang of it.
Below, I present the travesties that make up my corset attempts and my latest one, which I'm actually quite proud of.
Here is my very first corset. It's laughably bad, mostly because I made changes to the pattern without actually understanding corset construction, and also because it's just a plain lazy attempt.
As bad as the front is, wait till you see the back.
I'ts only up from there, right?
So my next corset was an underbust that I drafted from the online pattern maker. Now, as you can probably tell, I don't have much of a waist. So, I drafted the pattern to my measurements, but still calculated about a 4 inch reduction. This is what I ended up with.
Fully laced, it added 2 inches to my waist. Also, the problem with the back.
So, I decided to work on a victorian overbust, and this time I would be more careful with finishing. This was the end result. While very pretty for a beginner's corset, can only be expected to fit someone shaped like Jessica Rabbit.
the problems with it are pretty obvious, but here are some closeups:
So, I pretty much gave up. Then,
threnodynvelvet posts photos from the most recent
Maya Hansen
collection. My wife absolutely falls in love with them and decides that that's what she wants for our upcoming trip to New Orleans for a wedding. Fabulous. Thanks a lot,
threnodynvelvet . So, I went about trying to blatantly steal one of her designs. Of course, there's no way that a mere mortal could come close to recreating one of those creations, let alone one with mediocre skills. But, what the little lady wants, she gets. Here's the end result:

And with embelishment:
Is it perfect? Heck no. But it's an improvement. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Don't be afraid of brutality- it's how we learn.
