so i got up this morning with the intention of switching out my spark plugs to see if my engine would run better. when i went to change them, there was oil where the spark plugs were, so i figured that was bad and decided to try to drive to the mechanic, which is about half a mile down the road. well i got halfway there, and there was this loud

Damn, that really sucks! Sounds a lot like what happened to my mom's van. Driving without oil for even a tiny distance can cause the engine to lock up completely and irreversibly. :(
