Summary: Taemin started studying criminology a while ago and is pretty happy with it. Well, until the day his lecturer tells him he wants him to write his bachelor thesis about a psychopath. Will Taemin be able to pull through …?
說謊者 - liar-
Hastily, Taemin made his way through the clinic. It was forbidden to run within the building - his father told him more than once - but this time Taemin would just ignore that rule. After everything he had just heard from Raptor his father surely would able to understand the haste.
He’ll be so proud and Jinki, too, Taemin thought, still heading towards his father’s bureau.
Once he reached the wooden door Taemin carefully knocked, waiting for permission to enter. It wasn’t long until he heard his father’s voice and swiftly stepped into the bureau. His brother was there too, as Taemin noted after he closed the door again. Apparently, Jinki and Jinho had been in the middle of some kind of discussion when Taemin interrupted them.
The redhead knew what that discussion had been about. It was an open secret since both of them hardly talked about anything else than their favorite patient: Raptor.
“Taemin? We never expected you back this early.” Jinki shot his brother a smile. “Raptor can be a pain in the ass, eh?”
“He wasn’t that bad”, Taemin mumbled, then shrugged, “We talked a lot and guess what? He told me everything.” Nervously, Taemin tried to get his notepad out of his bag. “When I first talked to him I was kinda scared because of what you told me about him but he’s not like that. Sure, he tried playing his little games with me but then he suddenly opened up and-”
Taemin interrupted himself. Neither his father nor Jinki seemed like they wanted to share his euphoria. Both of them just remained silent, exchanging glances which said more than enough.
“Uh … I kinda pictured your reaction differently.”
“Sorry, Taeminnie”, Jinki sighed, the disappointment in the younger one’s eyes making him feel uneasy, “But please try to understand, okay? We’ve heard so many stories about Raptor by now that it’s hard to believe that he told you something that’s true.”
“Jinki’s right, son. There’re a few things Raptor likes to tell when asked but erm … he always changes some details to make them sound different. You’re not the first one he fooled, don’t worry.” Jinho sighed. “Come here, Taemin, sit down. Tell us everything Jonghyun told you and we’ll tell you if there’s something new or not.”
They really know how to burst a bubble … Taemin could feel how his own euphoria slowly started to vanish, taking his excitement with it. Earlier Raptor had promised to be honest, at least indirectly and until now he really had the redhead believing that his word could be trusted.
“Alright, I’ll tell you what happened.” Taemin slowly sat down next to Jinki, taking a cup of tea in thanks.
--
“Oh, not at all.”
Taemin excitedly held his breath as Jonghyun agreed to telling him about his past. He was sure that there were only a few who could claim that Raptor treated them nicely. The doctor, who got bitten by Raptor some time ago, was surely none of them.
“You don’t mind me taking notes, right?”
“No but I do suggest that next time you take a dictating machine with you.” Raptor grinded his teeth, watching Taemin shudder ever so slightly. He really enjoyed having such a great impact on other people. “I rather have my audience’s full attention.”
“I wasn’t sure how you’d react.”
“Normally like the Tasmanian Devil but I’ll make an exception for you.”
“Then let’s start?”
“There’s a condition.” Raptor got up, walked over to the iron bars and slowly sat down in front of it again. That way he wouldn’t have to shout when talking to Taemin.
“What’s that?” Taemin skeptically looked up. “You know I’m not working here and that I can’t fulfill any of your wishes.”
“I want to read your thesis once it’s done”, Raptor explained his condition, “that way I can be sure you won’t write something about me that’s not true.”
Taemin snorted silently. He’d never thought that Raptor’s condition was something like this. It wasn’t a problem but it still kind of angered him that the other thought he’d twist some facts as he pleased.
“And what if there’s something wrong?”
“Then I wouldn’t want to be in your shoes.” Jonghyun grinded his teeth again, looking up at Taemin. He wasn’t one to just eat others but he knew about the rumors and loved to frighten people by pretending that they were true. “I remember a journalist who thought he was funny and made things up about me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.”
“Why am I not surprised that you’re quoting that movie?” Clearly amused Taemin tilted his head. Jonghyun really was funny in his own way. “And no need to try so hard to convince me of you being a cannibal. I don’t believe it and I never will.”
Raptor never answered. At least not verbally; Jonghyun just grinned behind his mask, shrugging slowly. Taemin surely was a challenge but he already noticed that some time ago.
“I’m still waiting for you story, by the way.”
“Patience is a virtue, Taemin.” Raptor leaned back, closing his eyes in that process. He knew he couldn’t delay it any longer and playing games became boring. “You better listen carefully I’m not going to repeat that story.”
He warningly glanced at Taemin. The other’s nodding then was enough of an answer for Raptor to clear his throat and finally starting to talk about his past.
“The doctors did a great job guessing my age. Back then, when I was arrested, I was around 20 and you know 5 years passed since then. So you know how old I am now, eh?” Raptor paused for a while then continued: “They took Seoul for my birthplace, as far as I remember. Sadly, I can’t remember where I was born and the same kinda goes for my parents. I lost them when I was a child.”
Taemin held his breath, taking notes while looking up at Jonghyun every now and then. It seemed like the other’s childhood was all but preserved?
“My mum also left some years ago.”
“Sorry to hear that, little one.” Jonghyun’s voice seemed a lot more calming this time. It made Taemin believe that Raptor actually meant what he had said.
“Mhm.” Taemin swiftly underlined the sentence he just wrote. “Please, do continue.”
“I wasn’t an only child, I had a little sister. Her name was Jeong Ah and after our parents died we were brought to an orphanage. It was right at the border between North Korea and China.”
“Then you were born in North Korea?” Taemin looked up, surprised.
“Quite possible.” Raptor tilted his head just a little. “But like I said that orphanage was situated there and a nice old lady was in charge of it. She was a poor woman but still tried to help the orphans. She was more of a mother to me than my biological mum.”
Jonghyun paused again, giving Taemin time to jot down some notes.
“I lived there for many years. In fact, I lived there half of my life and I’m sure I’d still live there with my sister if it weren’t for these guys who showed up some day. They were killers and child abusers. Hm …” Raptor snorted. “They took everything they wanted, killing everybody who was brave enough opposing them. My sister … they abused her that same day … right in front of me.”
After Jonghyun said that, everything went quiet. Taemin bit his bottom lip, trying to stay calm. He had feared that Jonghyun’s story was going to make him feel uneasy but he’d never expected that.
“I was 14 and she 10, in case that’s important for your thesis.”
“Sorry, I really thought about that just now.” Taemin sighed, shooting Jonghyun a sad glance. “It must be hard for you to talk about it. I promise not to mention that in my thesis … nobody needs to know.”
“Thanks.” Jonghyun smiled weakly behind his mask. Considering Taemin being a criminology student he was way too naïve but Raptor liked it. He liked it very much.
“Where was I? Oh, right … after that Jeong Ah started to change. I guess the big brother in me is talking now but … my sister was special. She was bright and endearing.” Raptor paused. „Then she just stopped eating and became weaker with every passing day. The men didn’t stop, they continued torturing her and that’s where I got these wounds from. I wasn’t strong enough to protect my sister.”
“Jonghyun, I’m-”
“Wow.”
“Huh?” Taemin tilted his head in confusion.
“Nobody here ever calls me by my real name”, Jonghyun explained, shooting Taemin a glance that clearly stated that the redhead was now allowed to finish his sentence.
“I … I just wanted to say that … I’m sorry for what has happened to your sister and … and that I think I can understand now why you- uhm … why you …”
“Why I am what I am?”
“Y-Yes.” Taemin risked a short look at his watch. He never noticed how time started to fly when Raptor opened up to him and actually talked about his past. The sadness in the older one’s voice and eyes really had captivated Taemin.
“Then let me tell you the end of the story.” Jonghyun took a deep breath, leaning against the cold iron bars. In that process he tucked up his legs, wrapping his arms around them. “After five days Jeong Ah couldn’t take it anymore. She tried to escape. Of course I did everything to hold her back but I was hardly able to move back then. Later that day, one of the men told me that Jeong Ah had a little … accident and that she died. I … I never found out what really happened to her.”
Slowly but steadily Jonghyun tilted forward, resting his forehead on his knees.
“Jonghyun? You alright?” Slightly worried, Taemin slipped his hand through the iron bars and touched Raptors shoulder, softly stroking it. “I’m really sorry that I made you think about all that. I promise that won’t happen again.”
Raptor never said anything in response. He didn’t even flinch when Taemin touched his shoulder. It was like Jonghyun had known that Taemin would touch him. But that was impossible. Jonghyun wasn’t a visionary.
“Thanks, Taemin.”
--
Taemin took a deep breath after finishing his small report. His father and Jinki had been listening in silence, their faces completely blank and therefore impossible to read. Still, Taemin knew that his older brother wasn’t so pleased about him hearing entering “the lion’s den”. Even one hand had been way too much.
“Taemin, we knew all that.” Jinho gave an apologetic shrug. “Raptor told Jinki a similar story some years ago, as far as I remember.”
“He did?” Taemin stared at his brother, dumbfounded. „But … but why don’t you believe him then? What if it’s true? He really looked down …”
“Taeminnie, Raptor is a brilliant actor. He’s got some kind of sick talent to make other people feel what he wants them to feel. I’m sure he noticed how sensitive you are and played on that.” Jinki got up, circling the desk and carefully turned his father’s laptop around so that Taemin could look at the display.
“That’s not possible! I looked him in the eye and saw-”
“Saw something good?” Jinki shook his head, obviously not happy with his brother’s words. “That’s exactly the reason why I was against this whole thing. You’re already starting to think that he’s not that bad.”
Taemin snorted, only looking at the display. It was still black but he was sure that this was about to change. The sound of keys being pressed by Jinki’s fingers indicating that. Only a second later Raptor was visible, in a close up view.
“He knows that we’re watching.” Jinho leaned back, sighing as his words got confirmed when Raptor looked up, staring directly at the camera. He smirked, revealing his sharp teeth. “He’s always one step ahead.”
