scrabble TSH general question on pairings. 22 game tourney. due to flight problems, one player will miss first 6 games. there is a standby. but the standby would make the total an odd number, 33. would this be a good solution: the standby sits out today so no one else needs to. then both the standby and the latecomer start with 0-6 with some minus

Depending on how the tournament is paired, missing 6 games out of 22 is not a death sentence.

At the Word Cup, Albert Hahn missing the entire first day, 7 games, which caused him to be paired with weaker players during the second day. He won all those games, and eventually found himself in contention for prize money by the time round 31 rolled around.

I would just let the player forfeit those six games and ensure that pairing is by performance.

If the standby is okay with that, that seems fine. If the standby isn't okay with it, then just let it be odd starting in the 7th round, and have a bye from then on.
