It's alright I think. My mum always goes "awww I have this pupil, this little boy who wears skirts oh he's so cute I could eat him!!!!" and I think it's sweet - someone needs to love the weirdos.
Obviously, the "I just don't care so much about the rest" might indeed not be such a good thing :p
i think it may be because i was a bit like those kids when in school, so i kind of heart them a bit more. as you say, *somebody* needs to love the "weirdos"! ;)
i do care a bit about the rest of course! it's not like i ignore them in class. but i just try harder to reach the troubled, smart, gay etc ones because i have met quite a few teachers who openly say "gah, can't stand them. they're so strange/annoying/such know-it-alls" and just leave them to their own devices. clearly my 'work' has payed off since those kids always chat with me outside the classroom. at times they talk a bit too much and too openly but whatever.
i'm not saying i'm super smart or anything because i'm not, but i was pretty good at things and learned fast and in (at least primary) school i felt a bit sidelined because all teachers either thought we did well on our own and neglected us, or thought we were annoying for knowing things. and so i decided never to treat any pupil like that.

Sincerly,
a horribly neglected ex-child who would possibly have been labeled "gifted" in an American school programme
