Southwest Road Trip Day Four

Dec 20, 2009 07:04

We left Farmington at 8:30 AM (Mountain) and backtracked to Four Corners. To our surprise, New Mexico was a absolutely ugly. We were on the Navajo Reservation which basically means we were in shitty land (ie, think 3rd World Country). I was truly disappointed. Even the landscape was not impressive.

Four Corners was seriously disappointing. It was a concrete slab with some plaques, flags and info. Surrounding it was Navajo trading stands: flatbread, jewelry, blankets and etc. What a joke! It cost 3 bucks a person to get in. Mia was so pissed about it. I did make her stand in each state on the monument. At least it was off our list. We drove back near Shiprock (we caught a navigation error earlier than the day before) and finally got on the correct highway towards Albuquerque. The drive was through the Navajo Reservation (it is effen huge) and it was ugly and dirty.

People in these states have no idea how to drive on highways/freeways. It was amusing but it was wearing thin after 3 days of driving. Our plans included driving start to my sister's house in Fort Worth, TX. We made it to Albuquerque and was once again, unimpressed. At least we made it there on a real interstate freeway. The tribal highways are awful.

New Mexico seemed never-ending. Then I saw two cows humping on the border of New Mexico and Texas. We crossed the border at 4:00pm (Central) and realized Texas was a vast land of nothing. It was clean and most people were gawking at us (California license plates). Amarillo was busy but like Arizona and New Mexico, the freeways in Texas were under construction. We hauled ass to Shamrock Texas and got our last gasp of gas before heading into Oklahoma.

We entered Oklahoma around 8:30pm and went through more construction zones. We made it to Oklahoma city around 10:30 PM. The city is huge and I have never seen such great xmas lighting. The Sooners football team is top dog in town. There was at least 100 restaurants near the OSU stadium. We really didn't get to see the landscape because of the darkness but I had a feeling it was pretty nice with the trees and hills.

We finally made it to Texas at 11:30PM. We stopped in Grapevine to get gas (only 2 gallons left). Gas, by the way, is EXTREMELY CHEAP in all the aforementioned states except California. It seems my roadtrip gas expenses won't be as bad. Then again, I am getting about 33 miles per gallon in my 12 year old Honda. We got to Texas about 2 hours earlier than I thought. I called my sister in Denton and arrived to Fort Worth 30 minutes later. We got lost in her neighborhood for a hot minute. My sister greeted us and then I said good night....

I slept in a bit this morning. I had to run and I wanted to enjoy the chilly morning. I asked my brother-in-law for a 2 mile loop. He explained it to me but I was at a loss. My sister decided to ride along on her bike. Well, I knew something was wrong as I ran for what seemed forever. I didn't complain because the coll, crisp morning felt good on my hot skin. It turns out I ran 5.5 miles. I think Norb is mileage-challenged. My sister and I then went to the gym. She hadn't been in about 2 months because of her new schedule. I wanted to inspire her since she had gained some weight. I wish she took better care of herself. See dresses the same: shorts and white t-shirt. That is what she wears every day. I cringe with this fashion faux paus. Any way, it felt good to workout after spend 3 days traveling the upper southwest.

We got back and then Norb left for work. My sister made fish tacos for dinner. They were YUMMY. I miss being in Mexico this time of year so Lidia tried to cheer me up with fish tacos. Aww. We all hung out watching a movie and then I passed out.
