 vegans!
considering becoming a vegan - can any of you that are vegan talk about where you get your protein from, as it's not from meat, eggs etc?
and what are the benefits? have you changed since being a vegan?
what do you typically eat regularly?
thank you so much!

Congratulations on taking the first step towards being vegan, it's such a great thing to do for yourself and all animals! First off, do NOT worry about our protein: it's the "protein myth" that vegetarians and vegans have to struggle everyday to get adequate protein. Of course the classic protein foods are beans, legumes, rice, etc; but all vegetables have a certain level of protein, some quite high. For example, cauliflower alone is 40% protein. Eating a generally balanced diet will get you all the protein you need without any focused effort or odd dietary choices. Don't forget, the amount of protein that we actually need is much lower than many people think, due in part to the meat industries commitment to skewing data to show that we need LOTS of protein from meats just to function ( ... )

super informative, thanks so much!
one of the main reasons i'm vegan-ising is "keeping your body heathy and full of natural foods", haha. whenever i skip dairy & meat i just feel generally healthier and actually less lethargic as well... i just feel more fresh! :)
at the moment i'm just cutting out the main dairy and meat products, and when i'm used to that i'll get rid of the rest i think.

anyway, thank you for the helpful reply, really great. :)

Eternaltime is very right about the "protein myth". In actuality, the RDA recommends that we consume .45 grams of protein per pound that we weigh. So if you're a girl averaging 120 lbs, you'd need less than 60 grams a day. But also take into consideration that the recommendation for vegans is less than that of a meat-eater. This website has a really nice table of vegan foods and the protein they contain http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/protein.htm... )
