You seem to have figured it out, but here goes:

I'm going to use brackets [ and ] instead of the angle-brackets < and > because of the difficulties in typing them visibly.

To cut text, do:

[lj-cut] The text I want hidden [/lj-cut]

You can also specify a text to be displayed as the link to the cut:

[lj-cut text="I cut because I care"]The really garish NSFW image you want to keep off of your friends friends pages goes here[/lj-cut]

You can also use the new lj-spoiler tag, which works similarly, except clicking on it replaces the text in place. There does not seem to be a way to unspoil it if you click on the spoiler.

In Citizen Kane, Rosebud was [lj-spoiler]Kane's boyhood sled[/lj-spoiler].

lj-spoiler also takes a text attribute:

In Citizen Skywalker, Rosebud was [lj-spoiler text='see the movie first!']Luke's Father[/lj-spoiler]

I wonder if the spoiler cut works in comments?

In The Simpsons, Mr. Burns was shot in a season finale by [this was years ago, is it still a spoiler?]Maggie
