This is heavy duty, Doc

I know I'm not alone here, and I wonder if everyone accepts this and I just look out of touch to even say it, but I'm convinced that Back to the Future was conceived purely based on the idea that "30 years ago nobody would believe Ronald Reagan would be our president ( Read more... )

I could spend hours talking about that series. Listening to the commentary tracks on the DVDs answers a lot of your questions. The writers were afraid the Oedipal Complex would sink the movie, but went ahead with it anyway. And the promotion company didn't know how to pitch it. Comedy or sci-fi or action? And oh yeah, Silvestri's score? Yeah, their original idea was to just fill the movie with contemporary pop songs. New songs for the scenes in the 80s (like Huey Lewis), and classics in the 50s (like Mr. Sandman). Obviously, they kept some of them in place, but the GIANT score didn't come about until relatively late in the production.

You know, I obsessively check Wikipedia and IMDB for trivia on movies I like, but I very rarely listen to the commentary on DVDs I have. When it works it's really worth watching, like Mallrats' roundtable with Smith constantly making fun of Affleck. But a lot of the time, like with Casino's half-assed commentary, it just frustrates me and I decide to just watch the movie without it. But I'll take the recommendation and check out BttF's sometime soon.

Well like I said, I used to think it was a stupid waste of time, and even now I guess it's pretty irrelevant, but I like it. The more I think about it, there's not much I can point to and say "YES" as a good reason why it's worth existing, which is probably why it's solidly my least favorite of the three. Also it gives me kind of a washed out feeling at the end, but that's how most trilogy endings feel for me.
