Tom Brokaw asked Colin Powell about how he would react to the assertion that this was just a case of one black man supporting another black man, to which Powell replied "if I was going to support him based solely on race, I could have done that eight months ago."
I can't believe that the issue of race stayed this low for this long, though I can and do believe that Sarah Palin is responsible for bringing it to the forefront. Obama called her on it and McCain did a lousy job of deflecting.
The McCain campaign has decided to make the election a referendum on race, and is banking that the twentieth century can hang on for a few more weeks.
