Oh my god, I'm so glad you didn't go back. I was thinking, "get out get out get out" as I was reading it. It sounds totally sketchy and scary to me. I'm actually proud of you for being honest with him. I would've called and been like, "My (mom, dad, brother, sister) just had a heart attack. I have to get back to New York right now."

It's probably good that you did tell him he was being creepy. Even though he didn't sound like a nice or reflective person, you at least gave him a hint that he needs to rethink his approach, just in case he wasn't actually intending to harm you.

Still, he sounds like an asshole at the very least, so I definitely don't think you did anything wrong. Sometimes, even if it's not a dangerous situation, the money is just not worth the hassle.
