In California - The Golden Gate Bridge

Apr 21, 2011 14:03

All the years we lived in Northern California, I thought we should walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, but we never did. It's a classic case of putting off that one touristy activity because you know you can do it whenever. So, this trip, I said we had to do it. I've always loved this bridge. It's Art Deco (which is not always my favorite style, ( Read more... )

This is a gorgeous photo essay. The tops of the bridge disappearing in the clouds, the immensity of the south tower as you look up, the little human-level touches that the graffiti adds. Really, it's perfect. I'm really, really enjoying your trip to California. Thanks for making that possible.

I am actually leaving tomorrow for San Francisco (and then up the coast past Mendocino to the redwoods) so this has made me very squeeful. Any absolute must sees for a Brit on her first time there?

If you can only see one thing, go to the Redwoods. There are no adequate words for the experience of being in a redwood forest. As for other stuff, there's tons to see and do, and loads of delicious food, but I don't know your tastes well enough to make a recommendation. How long are you staying?

We've got two days in the city, then two days in mendocino, one up near avenue of the giants, and then three in the city.

I am a big fan of awesome things to take photos of, and geeky and nature and historical and slightly off the beaten track. Not so good with hiking or crowds of tourists! If there is anything you'd really recommend on the drive up (or back down) the coast, I'd love to hear it :)

If you can walk some way on level ground, or if you have a wheelchair, a really good Redwoods spot is Armstrong woods, because they have a really nice level trail without a lot of Tourists. Of corse Avenue of the Giants has bunches of gorgeous spots, too. Muir Woods is really really crowded, so you might just skip it.

Fort Ross is a Russian fort from the 1800s, and it's interesting from a historical standpoint. Right on the Coast, so very pretty views, too.

I love love love that pic looking up from under the North Tower.

I saw this painting of the bridge under construction on display in Orlando. (Fitting, I think, since Orlando is the land of all things mediated.) From here the colors look oversaturated and a bit off; IRL the tower pieces are much closer to the proper orange + some sunshine gleam.

If you have time, drive the circuit of Point Reyes National Seashore.

I do miss the redwoods!

Yep, we've sort of done that already and will do again, I'm sure. Moss grew up around here, so that's home to him. *g*

Did you live here at some point?

Yes, I lived in Oakland from '66 to '69. Interesting times. When I feel nostalgic for northern CA I think it's at least half about the times as well as the location. I've visited agin two or three times, and enjoyed it, but it wan't, of course, the same. And I, of course, wasn't as young.

It's definitely changed a lot since then.
