As someone who's running a game of Dark Heresy, and playing a game of Pathfinder, here's a few suggestions:
-Core classes only for first few campaigns. -If I recall correctly, encounters levels/CRs are based around 4 characters, so the EL of raptors may have been too high. -Ask for laptops to be off the table while playing, and phones in pocket. -You are the game master, you are allowed to fudge dice rolls.
For my games, generally we use a whiteboard, with a 40*40cm~ grid (5ft/CM) which has worked really quite decently.
I completely agree with sayt_smithy that it's not out of line for you to ask that laptops be away and phones in pockets. (If she's waiting for a job call, then she can hear the phone in her pocket, and answer that). If the call is important then they can take it in another room so that the game can continue for everyone else
