Barry Bonds is suing authors Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams, publisher Gotham Books, the San Francisco Chronicle and Sports Illustrated. But not for lible. It's for possessing grand jury material. Apparently the case hasn't been unsealed, but testimony and other material was leaked to two San Francisco Chronicle reporters. About two weeks ago, Sports Illustrated featured an excerpt from the book.
The book has sparked arguments all across the sports talk world. The two sides argue back and forth. "Leave Barry alone" seems to be a prominent response from Bonds supporters. They feel that he has been singled-out unfairly, and argue that steroids were not made illegal in baseball until recently. On the other side of the fence are those who feel Barry cheated. He used substances that may not have been tested for or banned by Major League Baseball, but they gave him an unfair advantage. Certain substances he is accused of using actually improve hand-eye coordination. Apparently Human Growth Hormone can improve eyesight, and others can improve muscle reflexes.
I guess the real question is which of these substances were illegal at the time. And there's a reason these are banned/illegal substances. They don't do any good. Yes, there are positive short term effects, but at what risk? I can't imagine what his body is going to be like in ten years.
P.S. This is just me getting some thoughts out that have been in my head for the past week or two. Too much ESPN radio.
