Nip/Tuck doesn't deserve that. Yeah, it revels in trash, but underneath it's really written amazingly well and the characters are given depth. And I don't follow TV shows for the most part, so that's saying alot.
you know, this is terrible, but i haven't seen it, so that wasn't fair of me. i felt like i "knew enough" to bash it. i had seen snippets and it seemed terribly superficial, and everyone always raves about the gore factor. one of my residents has the dvd set, i'll borrow it.
i used to shun the sopranos and sex and the city because of what they appeared to be, and when i finally caved, they were so much more that a mob drama and a show about sex.

something that just popped into my head. i like watching celebrities doing crap commercial/product placements but then become very successful. suddenly, he/she (though i can only think of female examples: halle berry, teri hatcher, catherine zeta-jones) becomes better than that, yet they must suffer because of the contract. delicious
I agree with you that most TV is trash, but two of the shows you claim to despise, "The O.C." and "Desperate Housewives" (and "Nip/Tuck," but that's already been addressed in a previous comment) are essentially satire that spoof the very trash you speak of. They are not meant to be taken seriously but are rather sometimes sharp and caustic revealers of how fixated our culture has become in terms of instant gratification and cheap thrills. You say, with a specific reference to "The O.C.": "The more people watch shows like that, the more numbing their own lives will feel by comparison." I'm not entirely convinced of this; obviously most reality shows are shite and provide an ugly look at the most debasing aspects of human nature, but dramatic shows are meant as a form of "escape" and "entertainment." Most people do not aspire for their own lives to follow the trajectory of fictional characters because goodness knows most fictional characters have far more shitty, fucked-up lives than us normal people.
