If buying for a friend, I prefer to get something personal. But for a child's teacher? A gift card sounds perfect. As the recipient of many such gift cards, I can say I'd rather get an AmEx card than magnets. And I tend to use them within a month of getting them.

But would you rather get a gift card than cash? And if so, why?

I can't say I'd rather get a gift card than cash, but I do know that it's considered rude in most circles (for whatever reason) to give cash to a non-family member.

She just got back from lunch without a gift card in hand -- she's going to give cash after all!

I think there's some kind of service charge to buy &/or use the card, too.

A friend just got one of these as a thank-you from his company for a patent. I was going to pay for my dinner with cash, and he said he wanted to use this thing up first, so I just gave him the cash ( ... )

* You can mail it? You can mail cash, too! I can't remember the last time I lost something in the mail. Pretty low risk. You think AmEx will just refund you the balance if a card gets stolen? Nuh uh -- “A $5.95 replacement fee may apply.”

* I find it hard to relate to this one, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Are you saying they're great for fraud?

* Yeah, that's not why it's better than cash, that's why it's better than a check.

* “The receiver just uses it in place of their regular card until it's burned up, so it rarely lasts long enough to incur maintenance fees.” -- and yet AmEx finds it profitable enough to charge said sleazy fees. It certainly matters to them; thus it should matter to those who are subject to such fees.

* No coke & whores -- that's definitely a disadvantage.

* re guessing the wants/needs -- no better than cash in this respect.

* I don't get your last point.
