Diane Ackerman's A Natural History of the Senses has an excellent chapter on olfactory + memory. The book's language is an odd sort of romantic ...documentary, I wanna say? But don't let that get to you. It's an enjoyable read.
You don't write about things you do with me enough. It's like we're not even friends. It's like you're just ashamed of me or something. Oh, also...I'm drunk on post-birthday mojitos. YAY!
As I understand it, scent is the least precise/discriminating of our human senses, but the one most closely tied to memory, and I think this may have some basis. I remember when I was in high school, when I went on a trip for a few weeks one summer my mom cleaned my room and put in a particularly distinctive potpourri thingie in the room. When I got back, I was reading a "Star Wars" book.
Several months later, the potpourri was back in my room for one reason or another. That night, I dreamt about "Star Wars". I'm pretty sure that particular scent is now tied to the Millenium Falcon in some dark recess of my brain.
