Two Men Charged Following Grocery Store Beating

  Supermarket customers and workers corralled two men trying to flee a downtown Rutland store after allegedly beating another man with a pipe in the produce department.
  "It involved an unprovoked, deliberate, voluntary assault on another person with a deadly weapon," Deputy State's Attorney Kevin Klamm said Tuesday in Rutland District Court of the assault Sunday evening at the Price Chopper supermarket in downtown Rutland.
  Zachary A. Grant, 20, of Granger Street in Rutland pleaded innocent to a felony aggravated assault charge. Also, Joseph T. Pecor, 19, of Route 7 in Pittsford pleaded innocent Tuesday to a felony aggravated assault charge and misdemeanor counts of marijuana possession and unlawful trespass.

  Space entrepreneurs eyeing Mars as a hub of some future solar system economy launched a startup on Tuesday to mine the red planet for building materials.
  The new company, 4Frontiers, plans to mine Mars for building materials and energy sources, and export the planet's mineral wealth to forthcoming space stations on the moon and elsewhere.

Tropical Storm Ophelia Strengthens Off Florida

  MIAMI - Tropical Storm Ophelia strengthened off Florida's Atlantic Coast on Wednesday, but its slow and erratic movement confounded forecasters' attempts to predict whether or where it would hit land.
  Ophelia coalesced overnight from a loose and swirling mass of thunderstorms and had top winds of 50 mph (80 kph).
