Sooyoung/Changmin

written for bamthegreat, requested lyrics from hilary duff's why not

You think you’re going nowhere, when you’re walking down the street.

He isn’t thinking rationally when he decides to leave his penalty fee on the counter of his boss’ desk for breaking any part of the contract that determines he has to stay. All he is thinking about is the fresh air of the Maldives, brown coconuts, blue skies, soft sands, and freedom. The after effect of what he’s done is something he can think about later - and he already wrote an apology letter to Yunho in his drunken stupor the night before.

“Where are you going?” someone is knocking on his car door just as he revs his engine to leave the company parking lot and he sighs, rolling down the tinted window only to discover it’s Sooyoung. She looks frantic and unkempt and according to the time, she should be overseas in Japan or America somewhere, somewhere else promoting the A’s and Z’s of musical lyrics.

“I’m just going out for a bit, I’ll be back soon, why?” he’s managed to keep his nonchalance and she seems to buy a bit of it, although still suspect.

“The CEO was just screaming inside about you quitting the company and leaving a penalty fee for breaching your contract to the managers. I was passing by when I heard them scream your name so I came outside to look for you.”

“It’s a misunderstanding.”

“Changmin.”

“Are you going to rat me out? Say that I’m still here? Go ahead and do it. By the time you go back inside to tell them, I’m already going to be halfway gone to the airport, ready to escape.”

“You’re being irrational.”

“You’re caring too much,” Changmin leans his head more towards the passenger seat so he can get a good real look at Sooyoung and she looks away nervously. “Why do you care?”

“Because I happened to be there.”

“And you happen to be here now,” Changmin states and then does something that neither of them really see coming. He reaches over and opens the passenger door with an extending arm. “So how about you join me on my little adventure and really give them something to talk about?”

“You’re crazy,” she mutters, her eyes fluttering wildly as Changmin snickers, some of that strong liquor he had from the night before still invoking courage from inside him, “what makes you think I would do that?”

“Spontaneity is the cure for uncertainty.”

“No.”

“What do you have to lose by joining me?”

“Um, everything?” The sound of sirens suddenly interrupts them both along with a blaring red signal from the building usually meant to signify something is stolen, not someone.

“All the more reason to do it. I’m going whether or not you aren’t, Sooyoung - but just so you know - all of this, all this feeling; it’s only temporary happiness.”

He gives her one last smile, one of his signature ones where his left eye droops and his mouth turns lopsided just when the doors open and the managers make a beeline towards his car.

“Sooyoung! Did you find him? Is that him? Stop him from driving off!”

“Come on, Sooyoung. Are you in or are you out?” he whispers from inside.

“I must be crazy,” she hesitates before giving their managers one last look and then closing the door shut, getting inside his car. “I don’t even have clothes or a toothbrush or my passport. I don’t even know where you’re going.” And truthfully, Sooyoung really doesn’t know why she gets in his car and puts the seat belt on as they drive off their company’s property aside from the fact that she sort of enjoys the thrill that’s riding in her stomach and that she can only look at Changmin for some reassurance that they aren’t as crazy as they think are.

On their adventure there are days when Changmin says nothing at all to her, just hands her a drink, or waves a hand goodnight before he leaves to his own room, and then there are others, other days where he drags an arm around her shoulder and pulls her close as they look off into the pink glowy sunset and reflect on the times they used to be famous, and sometimes he’ll kiss on her the cheek and remind her with a whisper, “so why not?”
