What type of heat-pump system are you looking for?

Air-air or ground-air?
(The ground-air systems need a borehole, which is bl**dy costly, but will heat a whole house without problems. Air-air needs several 'inside' units if you're to heat/cool a whole house)
What about an air-water or ground-water?
(You'll need radiators or liquid-based floor-heating, though.)

I'lll be going for an air-air one myself, as soon as I can spare that money.
Here in Norway it'll pay for itself in 4 - 5 years...

I don't know how cold it can get in your area, but I usually light a fire in my stove when it drops below freezing.
(I have a small, modern 'clean burning' model which is approx 85% efficient. Older ones are 'only' 50% and open fireplaces literally suck at 15%... Suck air, that is... 500cubic metres/hour, which really lowers the temperature in every other room)
I have the Dovre 250CBS(The link is to the English distributor, haven't looked for an American dealer ( ... )

A groud air system, but just looking into it for now. Trying to decide what would be better for long term usuage. If the costs of a heat pump system's to much then I'll just have to go with a Central heatnd a/c system.

Will there be any close neighbours?

Then you might consider setting up a shared system...

What you also should know is that some statistics shows a correlation between air-air/ground-air systems and a general increase in Asthma and allergy problems.
It is thought that the dry air that is being circulated picks up more dust than other means of heating.
The numbers aren't conclusive, though, but I figured that you might want to know.

Wish I could've fallen into something like that. My payments are killing me. Thankfully I am making just enough to pay for what we have, but....hopefully no sudden bill changes.

Good luck on the build Skunky!
