There's a checkbox you can set in your userinfo to be notified of your friends' birthdays. It's been there since I joined LJ in September 2002 - and it's never worked. It's been "currently disabled" for at least the last 27 months.

I'm not sure why this is a problem - it doesn't seem like that difficult a hack to implement - but apparently it's either more difficult than I think it is or it just isn't a priority.

In any event, the options are, I'm afraid, either to check birthdays.bml regularly or to make your own reminder.

That actually answers my question better than anything. Since I was certain I checked that, yet still kept missing these birthdays.

Now I know.
