the ideas behind my paintings are usually pretty vague... i start with some sort of abstract composition or idea for a central figure, and a color scheme, and kind of 'let it develop' from there, turning into - well, whatever it turns into. every now and then i will begin with a concrete concept, but that's really kind of rare. once i had the central figure painted, i started getting this idea of two women who were hiding or running away from something. one is keeping watch while the other sleeps... i wanted it to have a kind of unsettling feeling, like something ominous is going on just beyond the edge of the painting.
i don't know, painting is always an 'intuitive' process for me, i rarely start out with a sketch or preliminary drawing or anything like that. i enjoy letting the painting 'tell a story' not only as a finished product, but for me as i'm painting it.
