And... wow. Australia has a female PM! I'm still surprised that they actually booted Kevin Rudd, but I think Julia Gillard will make a great PM!

I'm a littled saddened we didn't get to make it clear we wanted her by voting her in directly - but then - we'll get a chance in the next year :)

I'm glad it's her. I've been impressed with her so far. Of course it's hard to know whether I'll still be impressed in the months to come - a deputy PM doesn't exactly espouse opinions of their own.

Although I'm surprised at the speed. It's clear there were significant factions and splits within the party that were not visible to their depth. I'm not surprised it's happened - but I am surprised it was first chance 100% support. A few days ago I was listening to parliament question time on the radio and Gillard was still very much a Rudd groupie, I've not seen any of the usual masculine posturing around this swap over (which is a big part of what I like about her!) and it's seemed very quiet, clean, diplomatic etc.

Here's hoping in the future Rudd gets a good posting as a high level diplomat again though - he's good at that.

Yeah, it was a bit strange, I mean she was thoroughly denying that she would challenge very recently... I suppose in the end the party convinced her and it did seem to be more graceful than some of the Liberal leadership changes in the years I've been here. But still, a bit surprising and it did happen very quickly.

I hope she does a good job- it's true that you can't always extrapolate how someone will perform in such a high office, but I have high hopes for her! Even though I'm not a citizen and can't vote for her.... ; )
