Nintendo has historically been a conservative company. Since the decline of the Gamecube, their production facilities had been compressed into a small, efficient size. Since nobody could have predicted the public response to the Wii, and these facilities are strained to the limit with the market demand. Now they're hedging their bets verrry carefully so as not to be stuck with a bunch of useless real estate once the Wii Fever dies down (which it inevitably will). It doesn't hurt that the image of "unfindability" usually fuels more demand.
