Television Without Pity did an article "If Geeks ran the Oscars", which is an interesting idea. There is a discrepancy between genre fare and prestige films. However, I suppose the problem is that the Academy recognizes it so little, there are very few nominations to quibble over. Yes, Tatum O'Neal and Linda Blair were nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Geek fail!

You can tell that I'm a film geek, because I'm really hypersensitive to the dismissive tone they use when discussing great movies. This is my problem and not theirs, but I still bristled. "Annie Hall" is my all-time favorite movie, and "The French Connection" contributed more than porkpie hats, okay?

Also, do nerds actually care about Coppola's "Dracula?" I wasn't aware that movie was part of anyone's "holy trinity" of anything.

I think horror fans like Coppola's racula because it looks like it was made on drugs and uses a lot of practical effects. But no, I don't think Ryder is a geek icon. Maybe an icon for...closet gloths? People who are proud of their own poetry?
