The trailer for Burlesque has premiered to quite a few snickers, with the presence of Cher causing people to take it even less seriously. This is actually pretty funny, since, back in the old days, Cher was something of a true, bona-fide Hollywood fixture. To give you the sense of how much, I was not the target audience for her movies by an stretch ( Read more... )

Topher Grace proved "he who hesitates, is lost".

*sob*

How can you mention Will Smith without his brilliant cinematic opus: Wild Wild West?

Hey, it was implied with "can sell any genre". Steampunk westerns don't make money by themselves.

Hey,

The Aussie invasion, of course, fizzled out

-Eh, not really. Sam Worthington, Xavier Samuel (TWILIGHT), Ryan Kwanten (TRUE BLOOD) are all still going strong, and I think Hugh Jackman is still very marketable.

Russell Crowe was too pretentious

-Dude! That arsehat is from New Zealand. Don't make us Aussie declare war on you *g*.

As for major stars- yeah, Gibson has finally been bludgeoned to death by his own bugbears (or Golems!); Cruise is living testament that the Closet eventually drives you nuts. I think the biggest and most enduring star du jour is probably Robert Pattinson...

I was surrpised to find Jason Stackhouse was Australian, but while HBO eye candy gets you invited to all the best parties and SNL references, it's hardly the top tier. Sam Worthington seems to be a go-to for playing CGI stand-ins or robots, so I don't know what long trm prospects that will bring.

I have my doubts about ay of the Twilight kids, because 1) It's hard to become a longterm star when the character you play is more famous than you, and 2) I think these guys are too put-off by the Hollywood scene right now, but not good enough for Dicaprio or Wisnlet indie/pretige cred.

As I pointed out a few months ago, almost every Top 10 movie of the past five years that wasn't Family Animation, Sequel or Based On The Bestselling Whatever... starred Will Smith. He really is the closest thing to a "bankable star" nowadays, propelling otherwise unpromising projects (I Am Legend, Hancock) up to the year's highest grossers.

Yeah, I do wonder if having an rather weak legacy could hurt him in the long run, but I can understand the objective of him trying to prove to anyone "There's no project Will Smith is unfit for if he tries hard enough".

Clooney has pretty much forsaken being a matinee idol. He's become kind of the poster boy for the Old Hollywood fan club. And his box office receipts often reflect this.
