It's Dead Jim

The TV has died. This was the first big-screen TV I've had. It was an early projection HD-Ready TV.  It's been a good TV, though has been getting a little blurry with age ( Read more... )

Has the lamp burnt out? Ours just went on the downstairs TV--fortunately that's a pretty easy fix, even for my fairly tech un-savvy mother.

Most TV repair places are actually good with these new-fangled type TVs, as it turns out. Which is nice.

No, this isn't a DLP or LCD Light-engine type of rear projection. This uses the 3 very bright (and actually Liquid-Cooled) CRTs, 1 each for Red, Green, and Blue (kind of like 3 small monochrome TV picture tubes) that are then projected onto the screen.

And it's a 9-year-old TV... parts can probably be found, but paying someone to fix it would cost more than it's worth. Troubleshooting it myself, while something I could probably do given the right info, would take a lot of time--time I don't really have at the moment.

Oh, hurf durf, sorry. I'm not the smartest about TVs. Now, projectors... anyway.

No, not even necessarily getting them to fix it. But sometimes if you just go in and go 'this is what's happening', they'll tell you what's the likely problem (and, of course, add on how much it would cost to fix it, but, well). you don't eve really have to bring the TV in to get a rough idea what's going on, if you describe the problem well enough.

That is a thought. I think I'm going to try to find someone on CraigsList who wants a project :)

Oh noes! Your giant old TV! It is dead! Our giant old TV died about a year ago. Maybe a little longer ago than that.

The great and mighty dinosaurs of the television species are dying out. :(

Yes...

But there is a less-giant now in its place. Not what I really wanted, but it will do for now.
