"Tony, what is this?" She asked. He stopped short by the bathroom door, as her eyes narrowed at him like when he's done something wrong. He had a towel in his hand, his hair dripping. And he was only wearing those pair of jeans that he knew drove her crazy because they showcased his ass nicely.
"What do you mean? Don't you recognize your own picture?"
"I know it's me, genius. But why do I have no idea of this picture and why do you have it, as your wallpaper no less?" She stood then, and placed her hands of her hips. Tony walked toward her, rubbing furiously at his hair with the towel.
"What? Can't a guy have a picture of his girlfriend on his laptop?" Pepper opened her mouth and closed it. That was the first time he referred to her as his girlfriend and he said it like it's the most natural thing in the world which caused her brain to go blank for a moment. Tony sat on the bed and she did the same. "And what are you doing with my laptop anyway? Didn't we agree that this will be an absolutely-no-work-weekend?" Her eyes widened at that and her cheeks turned crimson at being caught.
"I...I just had to send one email. That's it." She cleared her throat and tucked her hair behind her ear, then she shook her head. "Don't change the subject." She jabbed a finger into his bare chest, right beside his RT.
"Ow!" He squirmed away, feigning being hurt.
"Where did this picture come from, Tony?" He scratched his neck. He should have known that she would find out about it.
"Venice." He mumbled and pretended to be busy drying his hair.
"What?" She snatched the towel from his hand.
"That was from Venice." He sighed. When Pepper didn't say anything, he continued. "Remember? We went with Rhodey, and we got that 3 bedroom suite with an awesome view."
"Of course I remember Venice. But I don't remember this picture."
"Yeah....you uh...you were pretty drunk. Or, yeah, you were hammered."
"I'm waiting for you to tell me the whole story." She told him when he didn't say anything else. "I remember, vaguely, that you accompanied me to our suite because Rhodey was too busy flirting with the Russian girl. But I don't remember this." Then her eyes widened. "Oh my God!" She gasped. "Did you..? Did we...back then? And you didn't tell me!" She smacked him with a pillow.
"Hey!" Tony grabbed the pillow from her. "First of all, I would never take advantage of you like that. You know that." He told her, looking straight into her eyes. His sincerity warmed her heart.
"I know." She did know. "I believe you."
"Good. And secondly, you were fully dressed when you woke up the next day, yes?"
"Yeah." She reached for his hand and laced her fingers through his, silently telling him to continue.
"There was nothing to it really. We got into the suite and you were all sleepy and giggly. I don't know how you managed to be both at the same time." He smiled remembering how he wished he could make her laugh like that everyday. "I was ushering you to your room when you spotted the camera. And suddenly you were not so sleepy and got camera happy and shot pictures of everything. I remember being blinded with the flash several times. Anyway, when I finally got the camera out of your hands you gave me that look and I just...I took a picture." He finished sounding unusually timid.
For a while, nobody said a word. Pepper turned her attention to the picture. She remembered buying that dress the day before they left for Venice, and she was looking straight into the camera. She was flushed and her hair was a mess but the look on her face was unmistakable. She was smiling. She looked really really happy. Her blue eyes were soft and they spoke volumes, even she could recognize that. She glanced at the man sitting beside her. He was focused on playing with her fingers.
"So you knew then." Tony looked up and met her eyes. They both know what she was talking about. It was so clear what her eyes said. She loved him. Anyone could tell by looking at that particular picture.
"Right then and there? No. But when we got back and I reviewed the photos, yeah, I kinda had an idea." He smirked.
"So why didn't you say anything?"
"You wouldn't have listened." He told him and she laughed.
"You're right." When she fell silent, he playfully nudged her with his shoulder.
"Hey, what's going on in that head of yours?"
"I just," she sighed. "I just can't help but think that if we had, you know, become an 'us' earlier, then you wouldn't have had to deal with the almost dying thing alone."
"Almost dying thing?" Tony laughed, trying to lighten up the mood. "When did you become so eloquent?"
"Tony, I'm being serious."
"I know." He sighed and lifted their hands to his lips and kissed the back of her hand. "We talked about this. It's not your fault that I almost died, and it was definitely not your fault that you didn't notice. I made sure you didn't notice."
"I know." She squeezed his hand.
"Plus, we're together now. Isn't that more important?" He let go of her hand and took hold of her shoulder, giving her a sideways hug. She smiled and gave him a kiss.
"Yes, yes it is." She agreed and her thumb traced a path from his brow, along his jaw and down to his chin. "And I'm really happy that we are." The smile he gave her was priceless.
FIN.
